"Witty" Worm Wrecks Computers

A new Internet worm wriggled across the entire Internet in the span of a few hours Saturday morning to all computers running several recent versions of firewall software from Internet Security Systems, including BlackICE and RealSecure, according to this story at Washingtonpost.com. The flaw that Witty exploited was discovered Wednesday by eEye Digital Security. The worm overwrites data on the first few sectors of the victim's hard drive, making the machine virtually ubootable and potentially destroying much - if not all - of the victim's data. Update: 03/21 02:18 GMT: Reader Jeff Horning points out that eEye actually disovered the worm on the 8th of March, and came up with a fix the next day.

Microsoft hit by record EU fine

BRUSSELS, Belgium (CNN) -- The European Union has found Microsoft guilty of abusing the "near-monopoly" of its Windows PC operating system and fined it a record 497 million euros ($613 million).

The U.S.-based software giant has two months to review the lengthy decision and has said it will appeal.

The European Commission issued the unanimous decision Wednesday after a five-year investigation, finding Microsoft in violation of EU competition law.

The EU's antitrust authority said "because the illegal behavior is still ongoing," it would also demand changes in the way the U.S. software giant operated.

It gave Microsoft 90 days to make available a European version of its Windows operating system to PC makers without a media player.

Microsoft was also given 120 days to give programming codes to rivals in the server market, so their products can have "full interoperability" with desktop computers running Windows.

"Dominant companies have a special responsibility to ensure that the way they do business doesn't prevent competition ... and does not harm consumers and innovation," EU Competition Commissioner Mario Monti said.

"Today's decision restores the conditions for fair competition in the markets concerned and establishes clear principles for the future conduct of a company with such a strong dominant position."

CNN correspondent Jim Boulden said the EU wants a worldwide remedy and not a case where Microsoft has two operating systems: one for Europe and another for the rest of the world.

But it could take up to a year for Microsoft's appeal to be filed and it is not clear if the EU court will order the company to change its operating systems during the appeal process, which could last up to five years.

Microsoft's fine is the largest imposed by the European Commision for either abuse of a dominant position or participation in a cartel.

The biggest antitrust punishment until now was a 462-million-euro fine imposed against Roche Holding of Switzerland in November 2001, for its role in a series of vitamin cartels.

Microsoft was found guilty of monopolistic behavior in a U.S. antitrust case, but settled in 2001 with the Bush administration.

A U.S. appeals court is considering whether that landmark deal was adequate to restore competition.

The complaint against Microsoft centered on the Microsoft Media Player, which plays music and video clips. It is a free add-on to Windows.

Microsoft, based in Redmond, Washington, says this feature benefits consumers, but competitors like Real Network's player and Apple's Quicktime say it threatens their business and they want it unbundled.

At stake is Microsoft's market share in the rapidly growing home entertainment market.

EU's Monti: "Decision restores the conditions for fair competition"
At the moment, no one company is dominant and Microsoft is facing stiff competition in this arena, but the EU is concerned about the software giant's control of this market in the future.

"Sony is coming at it from the Playstation side. They see the Playstation as being the way to be the central of home entertainment. Microsoft sees it's going to be the personal computer. Some of the mobile phone companies see future generations of mobile technology as being the way it's going to come," says Bryan Glick, from Computing newspaper.

Analysts say by forcing Microsoft to offer a version of Windows XP without Media Player, consumers could pay higher costs.

"If it were to be obliged to offer versions both with and without Media Player, then that would mean we would probably have double the number of consumer PC configuration in our shops. Of course this is product that is built before it is sold," says Brian Gammage from computer consultancy Gartner.

These complaints against Microsoft are based on five-year-old technology, which is a lifetime in the technology world.

Microsoft's next version of Windows is expected to include a Web search engine that would challenge Google and Yahoo.

The EU is already looking into charges from Microsoft competitors that its latest desktop operating system, Windows XP, is designed to help extend Microsoft's dominance into new markets such as instant messaging and mobile phones.

For its part, Microsoft has accused the EU of going too far in seeking a record fine for alleged antitrust abuses, saying it is being penalized for behavior permitted in the United States and did not realize it was acting illegally in Europe.

Its rivals say though that the U.S. ruling in 2001 did not change the company's abusive behavior.

Lindows wil merknaam 'Windows' wereldwijd ongeldig zien

Mozilla/Firefox Bug Allows Arbitrary Program Execution

An article at eWeek has the lowdown. The article also has a link to the bug report which addressed this issue some time ago. Still, I feel safer using Firefox since malicious persons are much more unlikely to target any vulnerabilites. Note that this only affects users of Mozilla and Firefox on Windows XP or Windows 2000. New releases are already available on mozilla.org that fix this.

No 2.7 Linux Kernel Branch Due Soon

At the fourth annual Linux Kernel Developers Summit, it was decided that there won't be a 2.7 Linux kernel development branch any time soon. Instead, Linux creator Linus Torvalds and the official 2.6 maintainer Andrew Morton have decided to continue working as a team, further enhancing the 2.6 kernel. Up to this point, kernels ending in an odd number (2.1, 2.3, 2.5, etc) were considered development kernels, and kernels ending in an even number (2.2, 2.4, 2.6, etc) were considered stable kernels. However, according to this KernelTrap article, active development will now continue in the mainline 2.6 tree, and the final stabilization will be left up to the companies that provide Linux distributions.

The case for open source Java
quote:
If you look at the progress of open source products you can gradually see a complete software stack coming in to place. However, a quick analysis will reveal that there are currently many gaps in the stack (as there are in every software stack) - most of them are happily filled with good proprietary products. The pressure that open source is putting on the market is gradually becoming clear. Open source products can and do establish themselves in areas where products have tended to become commoditised and not much further innovation can be expected. This is where open source eventually wins hands down. Open source can establish itself in other areas, if it gets solid backing from a major vendor - but the vendor has to find a viable revenue stream as IBM has with Apache and Linux and CA is attempting to do with Ingres.

Enterprise computing is now getting partial to open source for obvious reasons (its has very low TCO) but I am also beginning to hear the argument that open source helps to keep the commercial software vendors from overcharging. This is fine as far as it goes. A good candidate for open source and something that is often viewed as a commodity is Java.

As was widely reported, IBM, or to be more accurate, Rod Smith IBM’s VP for emerging technology, wrote an open letter to Sun, suggesting that Sun "open source" Java. IBM, he said, would back the initiative with technical resources and code. IBM was, to quote Smith, "firmly convinced the open source community would rally around the effort and make substantial contributions as well." We expect that they would and they would almost certainly help Java to evolve.

Sun seems to be schizophrenic about the idea, and no wonder really. Like a virgin on the verge, it would like to, but it is not sure that it will. There are issues to resolve. Java is intended to be a standard with the promise of "write once run everywhere" (which is actually and undelivered promise but a laudable goal.

The problem with programming languages is that they evolve. They don’t get to be commodities. They evolve because they need to evolve. However there needs to be control in this, because it would do no-one any good for Java to turn into a "thousand-headed hydra" - it could turn into "write anyhow run nowhere else". Actually Java has several different versions already anyway, due to the need to fit into small footprints.

The open source community has managed to exert laudable (although not perfect) control over Linux, so it could rise to the responsibility. But the evolution of Java is already guided by a community (see www.jcp.org) so Sun is stuck with deciding whether to risk it as open source and get a much more active community in return or stick with the status quo. Despite some criticisms, Sun does not appear to be anti-open source and in the area of Java it has already contributed some Java components to the open source community. (It gave Project Looking Glass, the 3D desktop environment, to open source at JavaOne).

But there is another issue. Java is not just a programming language but a Sun brand, which is used to name a host of Sun products. There is thus the possibility of brand damage if Java became open source and it went badly wrong.

Currently Sun’s line is that an open source version of Java "will happen", but no date has yet been set. My own view is that Sun needs make a decision in favour, announce a date and stick with it - and in the mean time work out how to pass control in a safe manner. There are now about 1 million open source developers out there. (Yes, that’s right - 1 million) and a group of them will surely develop a Java killer if Sun doesn’t eventually yield.

Leuk voor Seti liefhebbers:

Earth to disappear from alien radar
quote:
The Earth is gradually vanishing from the view of any aliens that might be looking for us, because we are using fewer technologies that leak radio waves into space.

This is the view of one of the pioneers of the SETI project (that stands for Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence, in case you just crash landed), Frank Drake.

His remarks cast doubt over the current search methods employed by SETI in their hunt for little green men, but, he says, also suggest a reason for the deafening silence out there.

According to New Scientist our transition from radio tranmissions to cable TV could mean that our window of detectability is no more than 100 years.

In the 1960's Drake developed an equation that gave researchers a ball park figure of how manay planets in the galaxy are home to intelligent, communicating species.

One of the factors in the equation is the longevity of the observable communications, now, Drake says, this is substantially reduced. Assuming any hypothetical Aliens have developed at a similar pace to ours, and accounting for the fact that we're looking for a needle in a haystack int he first place, we shouldn't be too disheartened that we've not found anyone out there. Yet.

So instead of trying to eavesdrop on unintentional signals, we should be searching for beacons: signals sent to us deliberately. In fact, SETI has begun to do just this, but the activity is very new. ®

Microsoft Withdraws From Standards Group Aug. 24, 2004

It's leaving the United Nations Center for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business because of concerns about control of intellectual property.
By Larry Greenemeier

Microsoft has excused itself from participating in an international standards body because of concerns over control of intellectual property the company contributed to the group. Comprised of governmental and industry organizations, the United Nations Center for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business was created in 1996 to develop technology standards that facilitate trade among different economies worldwide.

The U.N. standards organization is a sponsor of business-to-business standards such as EDI and E-Business XML (ebXML). In the end, Microsoft's accelerated push to increase the number of patents it holds won out over any desire to participate in the standards organization.

Microsoft said Monday it plans to file more than 3,000 patents in fiscal 2005, an increase over the more than 2,000 patents it plans to file this year. Though the company ranks about 30th among patent holders in the United States, Microsoft intends to move into the top 10.

Open-Destination Quantum Teleportation

An international team of physicists has entangled five photons for the first time in the world, reports Technology Research News in "Five photons linked." Why is this important? Because it's the minimum number of qubits needed for universal error correction in quantum computing. In other words, they found a way to check computational errors in future quantum computers. The physicists also demonstrated what they call 'open-destination teleportation,' a way to teleport quantum information within and between computers." "They teleported the unknown quantum state of a single photon onto a superposition of three photons. They were then able to read out this teleported state at any one of the three photons by performing a measurement on the other two photons," adds PhysicsWeb in "Entanglement breaks new record ". This will be used in about ten to twenty years to move information among quantum networks. You'll find more details and references in this overview.

FBI captures Intel staffer with Texas-sized gun cache Bron: The Register

It's not often that "AK-47" and "Intel" make it into the same sentence, but that's exactly what just happened after it was learned that a former Intel employee has been charged with plotting to attack one of the company's plants in Arizona.

Last month, David Dugan was arrested after agents observed him "picking up an AK-47 and 1000 rounds of ammunition" at an Arizona gun shop. Dugan had been under surveillance ever since he allegedly placed a phone call to a family member, suggesting that he planned to shoot up Intel's Chanlder, Arizona plant. Intel confirmed that Dungan was a former employee, and investigators suspect that the man was disgruntled after being fired and enduring a long-standing dispute over disability payments.

"The criminal complaint charges that on October 16, 2004, Dugan communicated with a family member in Missouri via telephone, discussing that Dugan had received a letter of termination from Intel and describing ways in which Dugan would cause production at Intel to cease and that people would possibly be hurt at the production facility," the Arizona District Attorney said in a statement.

Dugan has been charged with one count of of transmitting a threat via the telephone. He could face up five years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine.

Agents searched Dugan's home and found an AK-47, a loaded rifle, a loaded shotgun, two handguns and 1800 rounds of ammunition. In Texas, that's known as "the weekend hunter's package."

The FBI alleges that Dugan planned to open up gas pipes in the basement of the Chandler plant and then to begin shooting at machinery. The former manufacturing technician was looking to cause millions in damages, according to the FBI's complaint.

A reporter for the Arizona Republic travelled over to Dugan's home and interviewed some of his neighbors.

"My daughter had seen him out walking his dog," one neighbor told the paper. "He had just had surgery, and he was very feeble in his walk."
