No Thoughts From the Sky Digital Metal - March 2003 This Lansing Michigan based "extreme brutal metal" act has issued album number five. They started out as a black metal band, in early 1991, according to the promotional flyer. The first I ever heard them, or of them, was in 1996 with Fire Turns Everything Black. Turns out they disbanded in 1991, formed Masochist, disbanded, and reformed Summon in 1995. By the time of Baptized By Fire, they had incorporated a death/thrash aspect, particularly with the guitars, but still ended the liner notes with "stay true." I kind of lost interest in the band at this point. I picked up 2001's No Thoughts From The Sky. By then they were death/black, no longer using corpsepaint, and new members were no longer taking stage names. After that forgettable album I did not think of Summon again until now. With this promo in my hand I see the flyer calling their past albums "critically acclaimed." It claims they are "America's premier black metal act", "one of the longest standing U.S. black metal bands", and "one of the most prolific U.S. black metal bands." Napalm does the marketing for Moribund so at least they still consider Summon a black metal band, even if the band themselves now make no mention of black metal on their website, preferring the title of "extreme brutal metal." So now that we know they did not follow their own advice and "stay true," does it matter? Putting And The Blood Runs Black in my CD player I find, after a suitable intro, that they sound just about like I remembered, only with a slicker production by James Murphy. The songs are short, fast but not blistering; heavy but not overwhelmingly brutal, with the characteristic warbling guitars of American thrash/death. Most of the songs follow the same formula. "Blackwinds Abyss" makes use of whispered vocals. "Buried Alive," a Venom cover, leads into the very brief "Satanic Slut" which has a very early '80s sound. Ultimately, both are forgettable. "Confusion Lock" has the essence of old Celtic Frost interludes. Along with several other bands, Summon is contributing to a distinctive American style of extreme metal, by combining older forms of black, death and thrash and effectively ignoring the Norwegian '90s renaissance. Listening to And The Blood Runs Black made me pull out old Slayer albums for the afternoon, not Summon's back catalog, but this is a good disc for the occasional spin in the CD player. I'll keep it handy for a while and see if it grows on me. [Grimulf] Digital Metal http://www.kingsofchaos.com/recruit.php?uniqid=999x8edi Join the war !!!! |

Probeer Fallen eens. I know it’s cold, but I will keep us warm with all the hate I radiate. We’ll be walking hand in hand in hell. |
