Abyss Studios Comes To A End - Posted by Legion

According to Brave Words And Bloody Knuckles, Peter Tagtgren appears to be closing famed Abyss Studios due to dissatisfaction of becoming a marketing tool for labels.

"I'm closing down Abyss Studios because of me," Tagtgren revealed to Brave Words And Bloody Knuckles reporter Carl Begai. "I am not a fucking trademark, I am not a selling point. Fuck everything. I don't want to be a part of that shit, no matter how much money I make or how much money I get for having my name on a CD for doing this and that. Fuck that; that's not what I'm about and I've never been about that. I've just been very fortunate to have all these bands coming into my studio, and fortunate enough to have these bands sell a lot of records, but now I'm doing Hypocrisy and Pain 100%. I'm not going to produce anymore because it's fucking shit. It's just a fucking industry and I don't want to be a part of it. It feels like a soap opera."

"When I produced the first Dimmu Borgir album I didn't know they were going to be that big. No one knew they were going to explode like that," continued Tagtgren. "They chose my studio and we worked together, so why do I get the credit for that? It was the band; they wrote the songs. I didn't go in like a real producer and say, 'Oh, play this riff, change this...' They played the songs that they had and I made sure that they had a good sound and that everybody was playing their best. When Dimmu exploded, I was like, 'What?!' I remember their label boss calling me up and thanking me for the killer production, and it bothered me a little. I was just doing my job."

"The bottom line is, when I can't hold up and give 100% anymore, then I know it's time to step aside."

It appears once Abyss is closed, Peter will focus on Hypocrisy and Pain. Tagtgren, however, failed to mention if brother Tommy Tagtgren will continue to produce or will leave the industry completely. His first goal appears to tour as much as possible, which means Hypocrisy coming over to North America for the first time since their debut Milwaukee Metalfest appearance a few years back.

"We're going to tour our asses off, and I wouldn't be surprised if we end up in Canada twice next year," Tagtgren says. "We're going to do two European tours, two American tours, we're going to Japan and Australia. We're going to show people that we fucking mean business; this is serious shit now. Even if you don't like Hypocrisy, you won't be able to avoid us, and maybe you'll like us after you hear us a couple more times. And if not, no problem, it's no big deal."

Tja, hij heeft wel gelijk. Aan de andere kant wel jammer want zijn producties stonden als een huis.

Sja... nou ja boeie. Dan maar geen debuut-bandjes die een killerproductie hebben op hun eerste album (Naglfar, Dimmu, Vinterland, et cetera)

Yeah. Ik vond die producties erg eenvormig klinken allemaal; geef mij maar Grieghallen.

Sja, Hypocrisy heeft mij nooit zo kunnen boeien. Het oude spul is wel aardig hoor...

Ah ik vind het wel lekkere muziek hoor, en wat vind je dan van Amon Amarth ? dat lijkt er wel een beetje op ? ik ken van hun alleen maar 1 cd (zo'n rood gelige digipack, ik weet niet meer hoe' die heette)

Zet je toetsenbord instelling op US international. Als je dan een apostrof, of aanhalingstekens intypt verschijnt er niets, maar je PC onthoudt het wel. Typ je dan een klinker dan krijg je de combinatie van teken + klinker! Dus " + a wordt ä enzo. En wil je een " dan doe je dus de " met een spatie. Simpel toch?

hmm, ik vind dit juist reuze makkelijk...in codes uit mijn hoofd leren ben ik toch niet goed...

't is ook reuze makkelijk, maar het is wel even wennen he. Een minuut of vijf.

näh, ik typ meer """-en dan umlauten, het is voor mij niet efficiënt. Ik ben aan het wennen aan een Russisch toetsenbord maar ik heb het idee dat dat minder erg is dan op de spatiebalk slaan voor aanhalingstekens! En op een Russisch toetsenbord staat werkelijk elke letter ergens anders behalve de C, maar dat is dan weer de Russische S, dus dat telt niet helemaal

Dit is heel erg. Heel wat goeie bands hebben hun album opgenomen in de abyss studio:
hypocrisy, immortall, dark funeral.

...I did hear some stories about Abyss. So, let's try the short version of it.

Short version… Well, it turned out to be quite different than we thought it'd be. We did know that they specialized in black metal, but bands from other genres had recorded there as well. We thought we'd meet some wise men there who would help us record and would not be afraid to experiment. Nothing of the sort. They had several types of sound worked out, and they work with them. It's probably with all big studios - they have done their experiments in the past, they have worked out their sound and work with it. Here's how it happens. Sergey says he wants to record the bass, and he needs this or that type of sound. OK, the guy says, let's try this one. Sergey tries out - nope, total shit, good for some underground black perhaps. The guy offers another one. So we tried out five or six, none of them worked. That was it, he can't offer us anything else. But the bass sound simply sucked.

Who's "the guy"?

Tommy (Tagtgren), Peter's brother. Regarding Peter, he didn't participate in recording, he only engineered guitar sound. We did the engineering with him. But bass was recorded with the method recommended to Sergey by Alex Webster, Cannibal Corpse bass player, with whom Sergey had a chat once. Alex shared his method of recording the bass, and we used it for this CD. But the worst thing about Abyss is guitar sound - everything else is recorded quite well, but the guitars are nightmare. It has this weird, not even black metallish tone, some kind of ugly "zzz". Our music is guitar-oriented, but in the end guitar sound was the worst of all. Something unreal it was. We were extremely disappointed. Never thought it'd sound like this...
