Gnostic was formed in January of 2005 when guitarist Sonny Carson (CORPSEWORM, SEVERED) and bassist Stephen Morley (CORPSEWORM, AOS, CAUSTIC THOUGHT) met up with drummer Steve Flynn (ATHEIST). Flynn was a founding member of the now "Legendary" prog metal pioneers "Atheist", and parted ways with the band in 1992, but it wasnt until December of 2004 that Flynn decided he wanted to get back into playing seriously, and began searching for musicians in Atlanta. Carson and Morley, well known musicians and long-time residents of Atlanta, recognized Flynns name from his work in Atheist and, the three musicians met for lunch, hit it off immediately.. After just a few sessions it was evident to the then three-piece act that they had real potential and wanted to continue to take the band wherever it would lead them. Holding true to their common death-metal roots, the band wanted somebody that could bring brutally heavy vocals to the table yet mix it with a touch of tone and originality. The band found that rare combination in singer Kevin Freeman (ENDERS GAME, AOS, CAUSTIC THOUGHT). Gnostic then recruited accomplished guitarist Chris Baker(previously with Ghost Story) to help put the finishing touches on the music, adding depth, harmonies, and leads to compliment Carsons. The band, now complete, decided on the moniker "Gnostic" and began to take things to the next level. When the music was refined to a point that it was ready to be heard, Flynn contacted his oldest friend and co-founder of Atheist Kelly Shaefer. Since disbanding Atheist, Shaefer had gone on to great success with his band Neurotica climaxing with a slot on 2002s Ozzfest Tour and is currently juggling 2 bands Big Machine and Unheard. Shaefer, wanting to leverage his accumulated, extensive music industry experience to help bring new and exciting acts to the forefront, founded Starrfactory Records. Upon hearing a Gnostic rehearsal recording, Shaefer said he wanted to represent Gnostic, and help the band produce its first demo recording. The bands hard work and Shaefers insight proved to mesh well and the result is Splinters of Change, and newly added 2006 demo. Gnostic and Starrfactory Records are currently working to secure a record deal for the band. In the meantime, Gnostic will be playing live at a venue near you and continuing to write new material. ATHEIST Drummer's GNOSTIC To Record Debut CD In September - July 19, 2007


GNOSTIC, the Atlanta, Georgia-based band featuring original ATHEIST drummer Steve Flynn alongside Chris Baker and Sonny Carson (who handled the guitar duties on the ATHEIST reunion tour this past year), will record its debut CD at Ledbelly Studios in Atlanta September 22-29. The group, which is rounded out by Stephen Morley on bass, and Kevin Freeman on vocals, has enlisted ATHEIST/NEUROTICA frontman Kelly Shaefer to co-produce as well as make an appearance on the album. Starrfactory Entertainment (Shaefer's company) will begin evaluating offers from labels interested in releasing the as-yet-untitled record in various territories around the world.

According to a press release, GNOSTIC comes with a ferociously technical sound that is inspired by the same school of technicality that ATHEIST fans expect, "but GNOSTIC is an angrier animal for sure," says Shaefer. "I think people will be utterly blown away by the technical metal gem these guys have written. Kevin Freeman offers up a far more guttural approach then me, so it will be blazing with difficulty, but relentless in sheer brutality."

Shaefer adds, "While touring this past year with ATHEIST, we were able to set the stage for GNOSTIC to pick up where ATHEIST left off, and take it a bit further with their own unique style. This is going to set technical metal fans on their collective asses when they hear it; the drumming alone is so insane. I think, much like with ATHEIST, it will have even the most accomplished metal heads scratching their heads with amazement!" Shaefer also warns labels not to sleep on this like they did with ATHEIST back in the day. "This WILL be a landmark release without a doubt!" he said.

De voortzetting van Atheist dus...gaaf igg! Ik hoop dat de golf van technische deathmetal aanblijft!

Het debuut moet nog voor de zomer uitkomen, als ik Steve goed begrijp, op Season Of Mist (inmiddels bekend als label van o.a. ook Cynic). Ook een nieuwe Atheist CD moet dit jaar nog verschijnen, en volgens de berichten op hun site en board staan ze op 9 augustus in De Kade in Zaandam. Ik ben er bij, als het ook maar enigzins kan!

Dan klinken we daar een biertje! Te gek nieuws zeg!!

Atlanta, Georgia-based metallers GNOSTIC — who feature in their ranks three members of the current lineup of ATHEIST — will release their debut album, "Engineering the Rule", in Europe on May 25 via France's Season Of Mist (July 14 in the U.S.).

Kewl! Dit wordt een zekere top-5 notering voor mijn persoonlijke jaarlijst van 2009, ook al zijn 8 van de 10 nummers van de eerste twee demos die ik inmiddels zo'n beetje grijsgedraaid heb - die nummers zijn daar meer dan goed genoeg voor, in elk geval. Alvast vooruit bestellen, denk ik zo! En dan uitkijken naar 9 augustus en de nieuwe Atheist schijf...

FF melden dat ie uit is (vorige week opgehaald bij m'n metaaldealer) en nog niet uit m'n CD speler te slaan is! Voor mij de CD van het eerste halfjaar van 2009, in elk geval.
