Ik plak er ineens een eerste review aan vast, ik noem hem:
If you won't take it from us then take it from the street:
quote: Stefan, Metal To Infinity:
For all those never heard of Gae Bolga before - well, these guys are from Belgium and their name of the game is Thrash Metal in the good 'ol school tradition. Maniacs following the 80s Belgian Metal scene definitely will agree with me when I say that one of the leading forces in Thrash Metal was Cyclone without a doubt! Frontman Guido Gevels and his companions brought us many hours of pure Metal pleasures ' we were all Thrashed up those days but we don't give a damn about the rest... Metal was our way of livng (decades later on now, I still can't live without it!)
During the eighties, Belgian Metal lives (remember Ostrogoth, Killer, Black Shepherd, Ritual, Crossfire, Evil Sinner, Ritual, Acid, Thunderfire,...). The Metal scene back then was totally different than what it is right now in 2009 - here in Belgium, we still have great bands to announce playing their stuff in several manners. I do have respect for new, upcoming outfits no matter the game they play but have to admit that as soon as particular bands appear with an old school attitude, well I'm fully focused on what they have to offer for sure...
A while ago, I wrote the review for another great Belgian band named Taranis - now it's time to spread the word of Gae Bolga's MCD entitled ''Drink Till Death''. Actually recorded in 2008 on tape as a limited product - those who missed the boat no problem... The brothers in GB took a great initiative and remastered the entire demo tape to unleash it once again as a brilliant MCD. All looks great on the outside, I mean the cover art reflects something real Metal - also the lay-out is outstanding but what to expect on silver disc actually? Good questions - feel free to read my following thoughts on the songs...
All explodes with opener 'Prelude' immediately followed by a real first song called 'Mambo N' 666'. Ultra fast one with awesome guitar riffage in the vein of Metallica's ''Kill 'em All'' album. High velocity axe assault with angry hitting drums and unique vocals. Singer Danny C. delivers the very best with his remarkable way of singing. While using the high pitched shrieks, he reminds me of Guido Gevels (Cyclone)... otherwise, Danny's voice is kinda raw grained from within, therefore I dare to compare with William Rodrick McKay of US Metal legends Griffin, John Bonata (Thrust) or even Tim Baker from Cult Metal outfit Cirith Ungol lingers on. Take it from me, Gae Bolga's vocalist / bassist is a musician that is worth remembering.
Next assault on the ear 'He's Not Gay (Let's Thrash Him Anyway)' is another fast track... playing Thrash Metal at will and give a screw about the rest - better believe that's the right spirit to me! John Berry's smashing and killing drum sections to mow everything to shreds - once again, the guitarists in charge Ian M. and Don C. taking the fast lane for sure. True fact I also like on this MCD is the way the sound quality - not too polished like we used to know way back in the 80s... great job guys! The title track 'Drink Till Death' has no speed limitations on boards, fast forward without looking back - next 'Smell My Jacket' can be considered as a personal fave of mine. Early Dark Angel guitar riffing and neckbreaking rhythms both fast and mid paced.. damn right I like this song but the very best has yet to come for myself.
One last song to go, more specifically a cover performance from one of my all time favourite Thrash Metal acts Whiplash. As far as I know is Gae Bolga the first Belgian Metal band who dare to cover Whiplash. Taken from American legends' debut effort ''Power And Pain'', I'm really proud to announce that Belgian based Gae Bolga's version of 'Spit On Your Grave' succeeds on every point of view... pure old fashioned Thrash Metal is breathing down your neck!
One thing left to say before leaving ''Drink Till Death'' is made for old school Thrash Metal maniacs in the vein of Violent Force, Recipients Of Death, Horde Of Torment, Metal Onslaught, Deathrow, Sodom, Vectom,... only Thrash Metal maniacs 100 percent pure allowed!! An independent release from a great band which deserve to catch a record deal real soon. Spread the word by the grace of Thrash Metal but first... check them out at own risk via: http://www.myspace.com/gaebolga MY POINTS: 87 / 100
