The Chalice Of Ages Genre:Old School Death MetalFormat:CDTracks:9 Label:Xtreem MusicYear:2007 With bands like Disgorge, Deeds Of Flesh, Severed Savior, Decrepit Birth and Odious Mortem coming to prominence in recent years, California has quickly become a hotbed for technical brutal death metal. The one thing you wouldn’t expect from a new California-based death metal act is old school Scandinavian death metal in the vein of early Amorphis (The Karelian Isthmus and Privilege Of Evil), Unleashed (Where No Life Dwells), Grave (Into The Grave and …You’ll Never See), God Macabre (The Winterlong) and Amon Amarth (Sorrow Throughout The Nine Worlds) fused with Bolt Thrower (The IVth Crusade and …For Victory) and Asphyx (The Rack), but that’s exactly what you’ll find on the incredible debut full length by Deathevokation’s The Chalice Of Ages on Dave Rotten’s (Avulsed) label Xtreem Music. The Chalice Of Ages has such a pure old school death metal sound listening to it once will make you swear it must have been recorded at Sunlight Studios in the early 90s. The guitars are thick and meaty, with powerful drums and deep grizzly bear vocals. With 9 tracks clocking in at just over an hour, The Chalice Of Ages is a relentless and infectious blast from the past. Opener “Rites Of Desecration” has a strong early Amorphis fused with Unleashed, Amon Amarth and Bolt Thrower feel to it, with thick catchy riffs, slow paced drum pummeling and meaty growls. There’s a slight mystic death metal vibe to some of the riffs and a killer tempo change midway through reminiscent of the sudden bursts of aggression Nile like to employ. “Achertontic Epitaph” continues the assault with chugging riffs and a slight Carnage / Entombed influence evident throughout. “The Monument” has a more up-tempo thrashy sound, instantly bringing to mind Unleashed’s early work. “Embers Of A Dying World” is a killer track that sees the band employing a bit of Grave worship, especially vocally. “The Chalice Of Ages” has a strong Bolt Thrower meets Unleashed sound. “Infinity Blights The Flesh” starts out with a strong nod to Nile before settling into a rumbling old school style and accompanies it with some killer melodies and tempo changes. “Carrion” is one of the albums few up-tempo tracks, with a catchy head bangin’ rhythm that would leaving you shouting “CE-NO-TAPH!” if it weren’t for the Swede-flavored riffs being thrown around. In case you had any question about the band’s old school influence, the eighth track is a cover of old school Dutch death metallers Anthropomorphia’s “Chunks Of Meat” from the criminally underrated Necromantic Love Songs EP. The album ends with the ten minute nod to Amorphis and Amon Amarth, just slow-paced melodic and crushing death metal. While Deathevokation are influenced by many old school acts, they aren’t a clone. The material they write does have many nods to Scandinavian-flavored death metal, but these guys do come up with some unique and refreshing riffs and melodies of their own. Not only that, but each member is very capable with their instruments, no riff, drum beat or growl sounds out of place. The vocals of guitarist Götz Vogelsang are among the best in death metal today, as his powerful raspy growls are very reminiscent of Amon Amarth’s Johan Hegg, the snarled rasps of Tomi Koivusaari (The Karelian Isthmus-era Amorphis) and the throaty snarls of Bolt Thrower’s Karl Willetts. Everything about Deathevokation screams “old school” and, honestly, it doesn’t matter if The Chalice Of Ages was released in 2007 or 1991, this album is simply one of the finest death metal albums ever recorded, from any era. While it doesn’t top the old school classics, it holds it’s own and doesn’t sound out of place among them. Highly recommended to an infinite degree! I can’t believe I didn’t find out about these guys earlier, fucking awesome! http://www.teufelstomb.com/reviews/deathevokation-thechaliceofages/ The quality of our perceptions determines the quality of our judgement. Zo loopt, in m'n mond. Dus dat het nat wordt en zoet, in m'n mond. Dát wil ik. |

"Apathy 'll kill you!" "I don't care..." https://lucidcream.bandcamp.com/ https://www.facebook.com/lucidcreamology/ |

The Chalice of Ages is zeker een lekkere plaat! "Apathy 'll kill you!" "I don't care..." https://lucidcream.bandcamp.com/ https://www.facebook.com/lucidcreamology/ |

Goeie tip! MC Hammer Smashed Face |

"With perfect and our by now trademarked timing, just like back in 06 when no-one needed a traditional Death Metal band in the first place, we are sad to announce that we are back - just in time for when no-one needs just another traditional Death Metal band. Feels as good as always. My good friend Albert M. kept bugging me and at the last grandiose Philly Metal and Beer fest it finally clicked with me. And for that I want to thank Albert, his enthusiasm was contagious. Not sure if that is a compliment right now... My friend Adam Walker joined the Deathevokation ranks on drums, him and I will jam here in Chapel Hill NC whilst Brian and Steve back on the West Coast will wait for us to get our shit together and that damn C-virus to calm the f down. As always, this will be exclusively about Death fn Metal and friendship, You guys all hang in there, stay safe and healthy! We will see you - hopefully - later this year or 2021. CHEERS!
