At the end of 2012 some former band mates of local metal and hardcore acts felt the urge to go slow and brutal. No Gods No Masters was formed and songs were written. Their 4 song demo/EP was released in September 2013 and presented during a release party with Acid Deathtrip and others. Their demo/ EP was greeted with positive reviews. No Gods No masters is often compared to bands from the NOLA scene and English bands in the likes of Electric Wizard, Iron Monkey and Black Sabbath, but with a twist of Cro-mags and Integrity.
Their live shows are low, loud and tend to piss off sound engineers. The band is currently working on their full length and is looking for a label that shares their ambition to release some vinyl and go for space domination.

Search for “No Gods, No Masters” online and you’ll find loads of information that has nothing to do with this band. You’ll find links related to this anarchistic/feministic/labor slogan, the movie with this name and something related to a game (Fall Out). Apart from that there are songs released with this as title (Amebix, Arch Enemy for example) etc. Makes you wonder where this new Dutch got their name from. My best guess is they refer to the slogan, as they use the original quote Ni Dieu, Ni Maître as a title for the opening track.

No Gods, No Masters was formed in 2012 in the east of the Netherlands. A couple of members from different metal and hardcore bands (My Endless Fight, Gilo, Human Demise) decided to give it a go with some slow, brutal music and to form a sludge band. There’s a couple of reasons I think this could work out pretty well for them. First of all, there’s a lot going on when it comes to sludge, there’s enough interest. Off course this is also a risk, as there is loads of competition who also demand attention from sludge fans. So, as a sludge band you need something to make you stand out from the crowd. Writing catchy music might be just that, and that’s what No Gods, No Masters did on this demo EP. The four songs on this EP reminded me of Herder and Haggatha. It has that drive and energy we know from Herder and combined this with that ultra-heavy sludgy doom sound of Haggatha.

This demo starts of with it’s best song “Ni Dieu, Ni Maître”. The drive in this song is just amazing. Don’t play this stuff if you’re doing something that requires a more delicate approach as this will make you rumble through it like an bull in a China shop. Things slow down a bit on second song “Lost For Words”, which is my least favorite song of this EP. “Lie To Me” and “Retired” pick up some speed again which works better for this band.

No Gods, No Masters strive for space domination. I doubt they will work that out, but finding a label with this material shouldn’t be too hard.

Ever wondered what it would be like if the muppets from Fraggle Rock got stoned and became rabid?

Me either until now but if they did this would be the soundtrack to their fuzzy brand of world domination via rabies!

Netherlands based (No Gods No Masters) EP/Demo is blasting through my speakers today.
Fuzz and Sludge and plenty of it!
This 4 track EP is wall to wall aggression and DOOM..
(Lost For Words) has a nice (WeedEater meets Fu Manchu) vibe!
The band seems to take inspiration from the stoner doom scene of the New Orleans variety.
Much like the NOLA based DOWN and Crowbar but more up paced and seemingly more angry!
On the track (Lie To Me) the latter becomes even more apparent as the sludge continues.
The guitar tone through out the record is huge and did I mention FUZZY!!! yeah its that Fuzzy!
Combine that FUZZ with a solid rhythm section & screaming low/high vocals you have one badass DOOM MACHINE!

(Retired) the closing track is the most NOLA track on the EP and by far the most hefty of the tunes on the short collection. Over all this is an impressive sludge/doom effort that stands on it’s own amidst tons of great music in its genre!
Before I go do yourself a favor!
Get Fuzzy,Get High & turn on Fraggle Rock with NO SOUND then replace the sound with NO GODS NO MASTERS and enjoy! For that matter just go listen to NO GODS NO MASTERS!

Voordat het Eurosonic circus neerdaalt in ons anders zo idyllisch rustige provinciestadje, knalt ons aller underground tempel Vera het nieuwe jaar loodzwaar in met Toner Low uit Leiden en No Gods No Masters uit Twente.

Zwaar en tegelijk psychedelisch is Toner Low. Hoewel we in 2013 de nodige psychedelica in Vera voorbij zagen spacen - ik noem namen als Naam, Moon Duo en White Hills - moet je bij Toner Low meer aan iets als bijvoorbeeld Ufomammut denken. Zware stonerriffs afgewisseld met rustieke, maar onmetelijke ruimtes. De band is al in 1998 opgericht, maar de eerste jaren staan voornamelijk in het teken van bezettingswisselingen. Gaandeweg weet Toner Low zich te onwikkelen tot een hechte zwaargroovende psychedelische doommachine en wordt in 2004 de gelijknamige debuutplaat uitgebracht . Toner Low tourt in de loop der jaren door heel Europa met bands als Karma to Burn, Isis, Electric Wizard, Boris en Nederlandse geestverwanten als Candybar Planet en Astrosoniq. Op de derde plaat, 'III' (2013) lijkt Toner Low eindelijk alle verwachtingen waar te maken met uitgesponnen, gelaagde en knap gecomponeerde space-rockende nummers in een heerlijke ultralage zware sound.

No Gods No Masters is eind 2012 opgericht door een aantal muzikanten uit de metal en hardcore scene om samen langzaam en ultiem zwaar te van het podium te denderen. NGNM is geïnspireerd door zowel jaren 90 doom/sludge bands als Iron Monkey, Eyehategod en Electric Wizard als metalcore bands als Cro-Mags en Integrity. Je kunt het ook nog verder terugvoeren op een mix van genre-oerbands als Black Sabbath en Black Flag, maar dan met een hedendaagse kamerbreed verpletterende metalsound. Het resultaat is stoner doom met een hard metalen randje en een schep hardcore gruis. Het klinkt veel opgefokter dan de meer relaxte grooves van de meeste stoner bands. Wat dat betreft doet het mij denken aan Herder, de orkaanband opgericht in Groningen, die eerder al stoner metal de hardcore hoek in wist te trekken. En ik wordt bij de eerste beluistering van de 'No Gods No Masters' EP net zo van mijn stoel geblazen, als bij de eerste keer Herder. Geniaal vette riffs met opgefokte zang in een heerlijke monstersound en stiekem verpakt in goede songs. Dat smaakt naar meer.
