Brian Chippendale is de maniakale drummer van LIGHTNING BOLT. In zijn solo project BLACK PUS verruilt hij de baspartijen van Lightning Bolt's Brian Gibson voor een 'poppy' basgeluid dat opgetrokken wordt door een door zijn kick drum getriggerde oscillator. Chippendale's onverwisselbare drums/zang combi komt tot stand door geriefelijk een contactmicrofoon in z'n bemaskerde mond te proppen, zodat hij ten alle tijde met zijn onder eeltkorsten begraven handjes de vellen kan beploegen. Een geschikte support voor Black Pus moeten vinden was moeilijk, maar het dekseltje op het potje heet uiteindelijk The Julie Mittens: de “greatest contemporary European guitar psych group”.

Black Pus is the solo project of Brian Chippendale, drummer and vocalist from noise rock titans Lightning Bolt. This duo rose out of the primordial ooze of the same Providence, Rhode Island scene that spawned Arab On Radar, Black Dice, Six Finger Satellite. Besides his frenetic drumming, Chippendale is known for hollering through a contact mic fed through an effects processor, embedded inside a mask. As Black Pus, he replaces Lightning Bolt co-conspirator Brian Gibson’s bass with a kick drum-triggered oscillator, creating gigantic bass tones that are then fed through a series of pedals. The result is heavy, repetitive but poppy music, compared to his main band, which is to say it’s kind of like limiting yourself to just one hit of LSD before jumping on the scariest rollercoaster ride in the park, rather than ten.

On the quest to find the most appropriate local support for Black Pus, who else to contract than “the greatest contemporary European guitar psych group"? David Keenan's (THE WIRE) apt description of The Julie Mittens further explained: a hermetic experimental/free jazz/rock trio taking cues from Japanese noise, free improv, psychedelic rock and experimental blues, playing improvisations that are HIGHLY energetic, dynamic and intuitive. Formed in 2002, this trio built a devoted fanbase with releases appearing on the acclaimed Holy Mountain. The Julie Mittens are abrasive but smart chaos, that mixes just enough humor into their assault to make you smile while you question whether chaos is the true fact of the world.
