ATHEIST Have No Plans To Record New Studio Album - Mar. 11, 2006 Seminal technical metal pioneers ATHEIST rehearsed for the first time in 13 years a few days ago at Avatar Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. In a recent interview with Goregeous Productions, Shaefer spoke about the band's decision to reunite and their future plans. A couple of excerpts from the question-and-answer session follow: Goregeous Productions: Who came up with the idea of an ATHEIST reunion? Kelly: "Well, it kind of fell into place naturally. After the reissues started doing well and people sort of came out with support of the band in droves, it made sense to do some shows if we could pull it off. It was very important for Steve Flynn to be a part of it, and he was totally into it and at the top of his game as a player so...It's on!" Goregeous Productions: What will the line-up be? Kelly: "It will be the 'Unquestionable Presence' lineup, except I will just be singing, Sonny Carson will be taking my spot on guitar. He plays with GNOSTIC, Steve's new band." Goregeous Productions: What are your hopes for the upcoming tour? Kelly: "Just to fucking slay! We never really got a chance to let these tunes hit the air the proper way back in the day. And now it's so much more appreciated than it was back then, so this is the year of ATHEIST, and it will be something to see, I promise!" Goregeous Productions: Rumors say that you're not interested in recording a new album with ATHEIST. Is this true? If yes, how come? Kelly: "We have been offered several great deals, but we do not want to fucking ruin the legacy of this band, you know? So many [bands] come back and do new records and they fucking stink. We are in different place these days and so it would naturally not be truly what we were. However me and Flynn plan on doing a sick-ass fusion metal record together, with guests!! That will be amazing. Can't wait to do that! So hopefully everyone understands where we are coming from. Those three records we are so proud of and we would never want to jade that." Of course, this means like four trips to the airport... Poor me... Maybe I should open up a limo/taxi service... I live 45 miles from the airport and 33 miles from our rehearsal studio... For four days all I'll be doing is driving and playing drums. "We'll be practicing on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The songs we'll be playing in order (though not our actual set-list order): 01. On They Slay 02. Unholy War 03. Piece of Time 04. Unquestionable Presence 05. Retribution 06. Mother Man 07. An Incarnation's Dream 08. And the Psychic Saw 09. I Deny 10. Mineral 11. Air 12. Fire "Tony [Choy, bass] and I will hopefully construct a bass/drum solo type thingy as well. We'll also get together a few more times before the first show in England... "I'm sure my bandmates will be adding their thoughts here as well.... Of course, all they do is either sing or play guitar... I'm the only one doing any actual physical work!!" Burkey: Well, my father played guitar- Country music, and he was right handed. He would let me play his guitar, which was right handed, but since I was naturally left handed I just flipped his guitar over and that's how I started playing upside-down. I had only about a week of training but that teacher tried to teach me right handed. It was just the basic "E" and "A" string etudes which I found to be absolutely ridiculous and a waste of time.Now I just basically make geometrical and checker board patterns on the fret board, play them upside-down and inside-out and they just sound cool."
