veel leesplezier Two of the largest individual contributors to Lisa Madigan's Democratic campaign for attorney general are the sons of a Cook County judge who received special campaign help from Madigan's powerful father in the March primary. David Harris, 31, of Buffalo Grove, and his 29-year-old brother Andrew are listed in campaign filings as having donated a total of $50,000 to Madigan's primary campaign around the time last year that her father dispatched 20 political aides to help Sheldon Harris in a four-way battle for a full term on the Cook County bench. The donations came shortly before, and shortly after, Sheldon Harris won the endorsement of the Cook County Democratic organization in which Madigan's father, House Speaker Michael Madigan, wields considerable influence. Despite those advantages, Sheldon Harris, who had been appointed a judge in April 2000, finished second in the primary after two of the state's leading lawyers' groups opposed his election. Still, he received more votes in the Southwest Side's 13th Ward, where Michael Madigan also serves as Democratic committeeman, than in any other ward in the city. The Harris brothers, who are both listed in Lisa Madigan's financial disclosure reports as self-employed private investors, did not contribute any money to their father's judicial campaign. Andrew Harris is a singer/songwriter who goes by the stage names Akhenaten, taken from an ancient Egyptian king, and Judas Iscariot and is a leading figure in the anti-social musical form known as national socialist black metal, according to an anti-bigotry watchdog group. His obscenity-laced lyrics espouse white supremacy, hatred of organized religion, support for anarchy and violence toward women. Reached at his parents' Northbrook home, David Harris declined comment on why he contributed to Lisa Madigan, details of his occupation or whether the money reported as a personal donation to the attorney general candidate was his own. He said his brother is living in Europe. "I'm sorry, I just don't care to comment," said David Harris, who is not registered to vote. Efforts to reach Andrew Harris were unsuccessful. But sociology professor David Kamens, who in 2000 oversaw Andrew Harris' master's thesis project at Northern Illinois University, described him as "laid-back" and focused on completing his degree. "I would be shocked if he knew anything about Chicago politics," Kamens said. In his thesis, submitted a year before the donations, Andrew Harris wrote that limited finances had constrained his field research on Saxon culture in the Transylvania region of Romania. Lisa Madigan's campaign manager, Mike Noonan, said Saturday that details of the Harris contributions were "a smokescreen" by her Republican opponent, DuPage County State's Atty. Joseph Birkett, "to hide the growing scandal surrounding ... the many questionable contributions and loans his campaign receives from defense attorneys whose clients receive very favorable plea bargains from Mr. Birkett's office." Birkett has denied any link between donations and plea agreements with his office. Steve Brown, a spokesman for Michael Madigan, said the speaker offered no special political help to Harris. Brown also said he did not think Michael Madigan "was actively involved in slating" candidates for judge. Brown said he thought the donations were made after "the Harris family read about Lisa Madigan in the Tribune and decided that she would be a good candidate to support." Sheldon Harris did not respond to inquiries about the donations. Illinois has one of the loosest campaign finance laws in the nation, and the Harris donations do not appear to run afoul of the few rules that do exist. In the primary, Michael Madigan, who also is state Democratic chairman, used his substantial clout to help secure the party's nomination for attorney general for his daughter, a North Side state senator, over former Justice Department official John Schmidt. The speaker pressured supporters for contributions to his daughter's campaign fund and even asked associates for their wedding and birthday celebration guest lists to create a database that could be tapped for additional donations. Reports filed with the state by Lisa Madigan's campaign show her receiving $10,000 apiece from the Harris brothers on Sept. 18 and $15,000 apiece on Dec. 20. The combined total makes the Harris brothers the sixth-largest donors to Lisa Madigan in her five-year political career, according to the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. Sheldon Harris was named to the bench by the state Supreme Court at the behest of Justice Charles Freeman to replace a judge who resigned. Under law, Harris had to seek election to keep the job, but he faced a vigorous primary challenge from three candidates, including Laura Sullivan, a 13-year veteran Cook County prosecutor, who eventually won. All of Harris' rivals received positive recommendations from at least nine of 10 attorneys' groups who evaluated the qualifications of judicial candidates. Harris, however, received recommendations from only half of the groups. Negative recommendations The Illinois State Bar Association rated him "not recommended" for election. The Chicago Council of Lawyers, in issuing a "not qualified" rating, cited "consistently negative remarks regarding his temperament as a judge" and described his demeanor on the bench as "arrogant and rude." But Harris won the endorsement of the Cook County Democratic Central Committee when it convened on Nov. 20. Before the committee vote, Michael Madigan had assured Harris he would get the organization's backing, sources familiar with the Harris campaign said. The next month, Madigan sent 20 workers assigned to the state Democratic Party to review signatures on the candidacy petitions of Harris' opponents, according to records on file at the state Board of Elections and sources familiar with the Harris campaign. At least 15 of them worked on Madigan's taxpayer-funded House staff before transferring to party-paid campaign duty, where they worked for dozens of other Democratic candidates for the legislature and statewide office. But Harris was one of only three judicial candidates who got staff assistance from the speaker through the state Democratic Party, elections board records show. Another was Harris' close friend Judge Robert E. Gordon, who donated $1,000 to Lisa Madigan's campaign. Based on the efforts of Michael Madigan's staffers, the Harris campaign filed an objection to the candidacy of one of his rivals. It was rejected by the elections board and a Cook County Circuit judge. In contrast to the amount recorded for his sons, Sheldon Harris was reported as personally donating only $1,500 to Lisa Madigan on July 30 of last year. Harris lent himself $150,000 to largely self-finance his judicial campaign and did not receive any contributions from individuals. Andrew Harris' message Any kind of political donation from Andrew Harris would seem to mark a sharp departure from the messages conveyed in his music. While attending NIU in DeKalb, Andrew Harris started the Breath of Night record label, whose Internet site declares: "Praise the sons of hell and burn the dogs of god ... enter the realm of hatred and blasphemy." It goes on to state that "We will not support any band, ... label or person who is not committed to DESTROYING ALL CHRISTIAN MORALITY. Breath Of Night Records will not tolerate any acts of benevolence or good will with the advancement of the christian ideal as an ultimate end." Since his days at NIU, Andrew Harris has formed a number of so-called black metal bands--among them Sarcophagus, Judas Iscariot and Weltmacht. According to Justin Massa, a research analyst for the anti-bigotry Center for New Community, based in Oak Park, Harris founded an international association of bands, record labels and individuals who espouse national socialist black metal, a racist variant. "Imagine White Power skinhead music, dress it up in long hair and face paint and you have national socialist black metal," Massa said. |
