There are a lot of bands out there that are messing around with black metal. Enslaved and Nachtmystium are flirting with Floyd, Manes and Ulver are hustling hiphop, DHG and Arborym are experimenting with industrial. But there are not many bands that have brought a mixture of sludge and black metal to a happy end. Withered is an example, and now there is Tombs, although it is probably too easy to pin them down on two genres only.

Tombs is Mike Hill’s band. With his previous bands Anodyne and Versoma the man already proved he could blend sludge with hardcore and postrock, with Tombs he added an ice cold black metal vibe. ‘Winter Hours’ has become a mighty record, with pounding drums, roaring layered guitars, and vocals varying from dark and clean to animalistic and raw. Influences are definitely heard, from bands like Neurosis and Swans, but also from genres like postrock and shoegaze. Mike Hill and his men took it all and brew an extremely original taste of “different metal” that will get approval from both black metal fans and postcore and sludge fanatics.

The thing I really appreciate about Tombs is that they use the same influences as a lot of scene fellows without ending up as another dried up Neurosis clone, or laughable pretentious black metal act. Tombs slays and shreds sincerely, and yet in an innovative and experimental way. There are little bands on this level that follow them in a similar way.
