Heliocentric is naast behoorlijk indrukwekkend en gelekt, ook bron van discussies op ons zo geliefde internet.
Robin Staps (het brein achter de band) geeft daar een reactie op, op Last.FM :
quote: Hi all, this is Robin from The Ocean. I have a general lack of interest in the discussions of local music police scenesters talking relentless shit about what they dig and what not and why,as if the world cared...but on tour and with a lot of time to kill,I got to read a few of these comments here last night..and I have to say, the whole discussion really amuses me.I have to thank y'all for that!
That said, I am not surprised that this album would turn off lots of people who are only into our heavy stuff. But if I look at the playlists of most of the people complaining here about how this is not a 'metal album', I wonder what made you guys like us in the first place... We were never a mere metal band and if you only listen to death metal, go listen to the last Behemoth album, it's a masterpiece, but don't complain that we don't sound like them please! And yes, 'Anthropocentric' will be heavier again, but to everyone expecting 'Anthropocentric' to be another 'Aeolian': don't buy the album! We are not looking for a formula to stick with for the next 5 albums, simply because it works... the 'Precambrian' formula, if there was such a thing, worked, yes. 'Heliocentric' works differently, it's a paradigm shift. If you don't like it, that's fine, but we will not do any album twice! There will be no second 'Precambrian', and no second 'Aeolian'. Ever.
With no delusions of grandeur and without comparing ourselves to any of these bands, I have most respect for bands who reinvented themselves at one point in their history, or even better, with every new album.Think of Radiohead, who had developed a successful formula and then at one point discarded it to try something completely new.Think of Breach's 'Kollapse' album, or Refused's "The Shape of Punk To Come".Not all fans will follow such radical departures and I understand that people who have only death metal bands in their playlists will let us go now. This dude here's got it straight: "The Ocean are making all the Big Important Men uncomfortable with their new album, it's not alienating enough for them, it's not abrasive enough for them, it's not "trve" enough for them, it's a little too close to the heart for them, now the Big Important Men who used to like The Ocean are angry, angry boys disappointed because the candy they bought (or maybe stole?) tasted different than it looked"
Funny then, to read people saying "it's a complete disappointment to me, just like '10.000 days' or 'Crack the Skye'... well, all I can say is, thanks for the flowers. Those albums surely were no disappointments to me! And please, cut that postrock shit! 'Post rock harmonies'! - now what kind of harmonies would that be, harmonies that were invented by bands that you people tag "post rock"? Guess what, each single one of those harmonies you have in mind existed centuries before anyone ever came up with the term "post rock", and whether you play these harmonies on a piano or on a distorted guitar is merely a question of instrumentation and musical style, the ideas are essentially the same.
We do appreciate all this discussion, criticism and praise, from people who are baffled, excited, disappointed. The discussion at metalsucks.net is a bit more substantial than this one here though... however, my personal favourite's from here: "This album is the musical equivalent of going to a bar and meeting a really hot girl, who laughs at all your jokes and pays for her own drinks, then going back to her apartment, into her bedroom, unbuttoning her dress, then slowly slipping off her panties and finding out SHE HAS A FUCKING PENIS!!!!!" Cheers dude, I'm gonna put this up on our myspace right now, this is fucking awesome, haha... Keep it coming everyone, if you feel let down, get over it and find new bands to listen to and if you do wanna support us, order a vinyl or CD box copy from our website.
De man is een held.
En dit is trouwens een link naar bovenstaande, het staat in de shoutbox.
