Ja was een beetje irritant, we moesten langer wachten op de drukker dan verwacht. Anderzijds: we spreken hier ook niet over Nuclear Blast ofzo met een strakke lijst met deadlines en dat soort ongein. Het album (pas) is uit wanneer alles klaar is, opgehaald van de fabriek en als alle partijen tevreden zijn. Ik zal nooit gaan werken met data's omdat cds dan misschien theoretisch beter gaan verkopen ofzo.
Overigens had ik de boekjes al een paar dagen in huis toen ik het postte, dus het is onmogelijk te zeggen dat de cd op de 31e uitkwam, of op de 29e, of op 3 januari. Tjsa... Naja, dat gewoon ter uitleg. Wat mij betreft het beste Nederlandse metalalbum van 2011 EN 2012 .

An atmospheric and coherent slab of viking/folk, with enough self-conceit to distinguish it from other great releases in the genre.

18 Woods of Infinity - Forlat
Perversity. Madness. Magnificent music. Impossible combination? Nope. Check these lunatics.

17 Taake - Noregs Vaapen
Black metal masters Taake once again deliver. Everything they do will always be compared to Over Bjoergvin Graater Hemmerik, but this album is one of the best in their time-spanning career.

16 Skalmöld - Baldur
Together with bands like Glittertind, Svartsot and Baldrs Draumar the leaders of a new generation of folk- inspired bands. Baldur is a superb and wayward album, a true work of art. The only thing Skalmöld has to do is to clean up their stage presence. Because they now look like a bunch of gays.

15 Vallenfyre - a Fragile King
Quite a surprise, this one. Maybe not altogether musically (though being crushingly good death metal), but for sure in the text departement. I mean, lyrics centering around a dad who died of cancer... Serious and emotional stuff.

14 Ravencult - Morbid Blood
No post/ambient/depressive or whatever black metal, but just a straight forward and facemelting assault. Care for some headbanging, anyone?

13 Toxic Holocaust - Conjure and Command
Play this blackened speed/thrash grenade loud in your car, and you're destined to receive some traffic fines. Great album that doesn't wear thin after a few spins.

12 Nader Sadek - In the Flesh
This is probably the record that Morbid Angel should have made. Enough said.

11 Craft - Void
Hateful, punk infused black metal is what we're dealing with here. Misanthropy and annihilation. Killer album from these Swedes. Great cover, too.

10 Demonaz - March of the Norse
I think this is a somewhat underrated record. A damn shame, cause we're talking metal here, people, transcending all genres. March of the Norse is loaded with fist-pumping anthems, mostly mid-paced, with searing leads and fierce drumming. Catchy as hell. Give it a try.

9 Helheim - Heidindomr ok Motgangr
Another slightly overlooked album, me thinks. But compared to Demonaz' March of the Norse, this is a complex and progressive effort, not to be digested easily, but worth every second of your precious time. Helheim are at the top of their game with Heidindomr.

8 Krisiun - The Great Execution
At the top of their game goes for every band that follows from now on. Like Krisiun. These Brasilians reinvented themselves with a huge outcome. A lot more experimentation, fantastic guitar work and long but very interesting songs. This one's a winner.

7 Arkona - Slovo
The soul of Mother Russia shines here in every song, from epic warrior tunes like Nikogda to pure folk ones like Stenka Nis Stenku. It's no coincidence that Arkona was the best band on the last Heidenfest package. They are slowly becoming the major force in pagan/folk metal.

6 Glorior Belli - The Great Southern Darkness
And what a strange brew it is, this southern black metal. But it works, yes sirree! It's compelling, mesmerizing, and, in a weird way, logical. Must be the work of the devil. Right, Robert Johnson?

5 Vader - Welcome to the Morbid Reich
Another Stalwart that blasted my head of with their latest. Without a doubt the best death/thrash release of 2011. 100% Vader: harsh, fast&crushing. Special props go to new axeman Spider: he puts extra venom in the material.

4 Tyr - The Lay of Thrym
Tyr also reinvented itself, a process that started with By the Light of the Northern Star, and now finds it's completion in The Lay of Thrym. Gone are the progressive elements that killed albums like Ragnarok and Land. The songs on those cd's were but mere vehicles for technical wizardry and tiring melodical shifts. Here, on the Lay of Thrym, it's all about the Songs. And what powerhouses they are! Every single one is a gem in it's own right, and, on top of that, very persistent earcrawlers. I say: all hail the reborn Tyr!

3 Shining - VII: Född Förlorare
Forget the sensation that this band/Kvarforth causes. Concentrate on the music. Because that's fucking incredible. All songs hunt down your soul, tear it apart, devour it, just to spit it out again and to caress it, with a disturbing smile on their pale faces. This is otherwordly good music, my friends.

2 Tsjuder - Legion Helvete
Just when one thinks that it can't get any better with uncompromising traditional black metal releases, Tsjuder drops a new one, and they are back with a vengeance. Legion Helvete is a monster of an album. This is how it should be done. Right from the start of The Daemon Throne one can hear that it's all there: the punishing riffs, the groove (Fra En Ratten Kiste, Voldherskeren), hell, even some shout alongs (Slakt, Black Shadows of Hell). This is loud and unrelenting old-skool black metal. At it's best.

Majestic. Stroke of genius. Flawless. Moving. Captivating. The best album of 2011. Period.
