Yesterday we already informed you zombie movie fanatics that Shawn Roberts will star in the upcoming "Diary of the Dead" and now the production team of George Romero's new zombie movie informed us that shooting already has begun and they also provided us with the complete casting lineup as well. Nearly 40 years after he re-invented the horror genre with "Night of the Living Dead", George A. Romero's "Diary of the Dead" began production Wednesday in Toronto, Ontario. Filming will take place in and around the GTA for the next several weeks.

"Diary of the Dead" marks Romero's first independently financed zombie film in over two decades. Written and directed by Romero and produced by Romero-Grunwald Productions and Artfire Films, "Diary of the Dead" returns to the beginning of the living dead outbreak - telling the story of a group of student filmmakers who document their deadly encounters with ravenous flesh-eaters just as the world is first plunged into chaos. The film will showcase Romero's renowned sense of diabolical humour mixed with biting social commentary while utilizing the latest in filmmaking technologies to document the rising of the dead!

George A. Romero ready to open the Diary of the DeadI just got off the phone with the master himself, George A. Romero, and the big guy was kind enough to grant yours truly the official word about his next project, something we've come to know as Diary of the Dead.

Diary will be going back to the time of the initial outbreak. That's right, kids, we get to revisit the very first night!

"I wanted a new set of characters and have them deal with these events as they first come," says Romero. "I also want to deal with things from a very different perspective." that perspective being a subjective camera point of view a la Blair Witch as a means to reinvent the franchise a bit.

Diary will follow the exploits of a group of college students who are making a horror film. When the news breaks that the dead are returning to life, the group hops into their van with their camera in an attempt to try and get some footage.

"I want to do this from a subjective kind of view with no music. You know, something really raw," Romero elaborates. "So it's kind of a stylistic experiment, a low budget, under the radar kind of thing that's just sort of from the heart."

Right now Diary of the Dead looks like something Romero is more interested in releasing in a direct-to-video capacity instead of theatrically, although that might happen as well.

Why direct-to-video? George can do more of what he wants that way. Especially pertaining to how much violence can be showcased in the movie. Diary is a project he is making for his fans independent of all the usual Hollywood rules and regulations. Romero also assured me that there will be the right kind of gore in the film that we all know and love, and he is in talks with Greg Nicotero of KNB to do the effects.

Diary of the Dead will begin filming in Canada sometime toward the end of this year, even as early as October.

Another project we've been hearing about as of late is Solitary Isle. "Nothing is official as of yet," Romero explains, "but it looks good, and I hope it will happen."

Also, as a bonus for you mobile phone junkies, we are happy to report the first bit of news anywhere that George is working on a special episodic project for cell phones that will follow the exploits of a hungry zombie who's after a hot babe. According to George, "It's a comedy. It's gonna be like the Road Runner and the Coyote cartoons. It's one zombie and one victim. This zombie keeps trying to nail this woman, and everything backfires on him. He just keeps getting fucked over. And of course zombies don't die so if he gets flattened by a boulder, he'll remain flat!"

Iig, net weer eens een poging gedaan en jawel, eindelijk een werkende versie van diary of the dead op de harde schijf. Yeah! Vannacht kijken en natuurlijk absoluut kopen alstie uit is.

ah, thanx ik was gewoon benieuwd, ik lees veel goeds over [rec]. Romero heeft ook zo een soort film gemaakt, toch? nou, ik vond cloverfield vet, en wil zowel [rec] als de nieuwe romero-film zeker gaan zien..

Rec is wel spaans gesproken, is me verteld. En er komt een amerikaanse versie.

Man, zombies spreken toch helemaal niet!

Ga maar eens rap day of the dead 2008 kijken!! Die heerst! Welke trouwens GEEN remake is, maar wel gaaf.

Ik heb net Diary Of The Dead gezien, viel me een beetje tegen..

Vooral die vervelende personages stoorde me..

Ik heb 'em vannacht ook gekeken. Ik vond 'em ietwat overgeacteerd, dat wel. Maar voor de rest een dikke 9. Veel beter dan land of the dead, dát vond ik een enorme tegenvaller. De cynische ondertoon van deze film vond ik erg gaaf, typisch romero. Evenals zijn "statement" in de film dat ZOMBIES...NIET...RENNEN...

Mooiste scene? Dat ze een zombie pakken dmv die 2 dingen waarme je iemand een schok geeft om zijn of haar hart weer aan de gang te krijgen. Ploeps, daar gingen de ogen.

Vanavond dusch maar even Day of the Dead en Diary of the Dead kijken! Ben benieuwd! (Overigens vond ik Land of the Dead wel okay...)

Diary of the Dead was gaaf! Beetje Blairwitcherig , maar het verhaal zat wel goed in elkaar.

En day of the dead? Of was het de 2008 versie?

Ik vond die trouwens ook wel vet, wel hele snelle zombies, maar goed gedaan.

Ja, die vond ik ook vrij sterk, had ik niet verwacht. Maar je hebt de romero versie ook gezien, mag ik hopen? Bub heerst!

De Romero versie heeft een hele beklemmende sfeer die ik toch mis in de remake.

Binnenkord diary maar kijken. Ben erg benieuwd.

Ho ho ho... Die day of the dead 2008 is GEEN, ik herhaal, GEEN remake! Die film staat op zichzelf, romero heeft er niets mee te maken. Desondanks wastie wel gaaf, maar imo komtie niet in de buurt van romero's day of the dead.
