Kazaa may end the free music download Posted by me101 on 10 Oct 2003 - 20:16 | 23 comments Kazaa has thrown its weight behind a plan to start billing song swappers for their music downloads. The proposal, which could finally end the days of the free lunch for millions of music fans (with approx 5 million simultaneous users are logged into its network at any time), has been put to big US record labels at the same time as a new legitimate version of the former file-swapping giant Napster is launched in the US. The idea is to phase in a billing mechanism for peer to peer networks, such as Kazaa and Morpheus, that allow users to copy music directly from each other's hard drives. Initially payments would be by credit card, but in the future downloads would be automatically detected and a charge added to the monthly internet service provider bill. Kazaa now hopes the music industry will forget past grievances and tap into the cleaned up versions of the networks that already have millions of users, rather than build their own networks from scratch. Nikki Hemming, the Sydney-based chief executive of Sharman Networks, which runs Kazaa, said the business model offered "great hope for the entertainment industry". Marty Lafferty, president of the Distributed Computing Industry Association. predictes that within four years of the big record labels adopting the plan, online music sales would outperform traditional offline sales. "The whole effort here is to go where the consumers are, to convert all that energy to selling licensed music" Marty says. By that time, Marty forecasts that 1.8 billion licensed tracks would be downloaded a month, worth more than $1 billion a month in revenue. News source: CD Freaks |

Student faces suit over key to CD locks Posted by malebolgia on 10 Oct 2003 - 06:57 | 90 comments SunnComm Technologies, a developer of CD antipiracy technology, said Thursday that it will likely sue a Princeton student who early this week showed how to evade the company's copy protection by pushing a computer's Shift key. Princeton Ph.D. student John "Alex" Halderman published a paper on his Web site on Monday that gave detailed instructions on how to disarm the SunnComm technology, which aims to block unauthorized CD copying and MP3 ripping. The technology is included on an album by Anthony Hamilton that was recently distributed by BMG Music. On Thursday, SunnComm CEO Peter Jacobs said the company plans legal action and is considering both criminal and civil suits. He said it may charge the student with maligning the company's reputation and, possibly, with violating copyright law that bans the distribution of tools for breaking through digital piracy safeguards. "We feel we were the victim of an unannounced agenda and that the company has been wronged," Jacobs said. "I think the agenda is: 'Digital property should belong to everyone on the Internet.' I'm not sure that works in the marketplace." The cases are already being examined by some intellectual-property lawyers for their potential to test the extremes of a controversial copyright law that block the distribution of information or software that breaks or "circumvents" copy-protection technologies. bron:Neowin |

UK Government announces Open Source trials Posted by malebolgia on 12 Oct 2003 - 02:11 | 2 comments Open Source software received a boost, yesterday, wth the announcement that nine government departments are piloting Open Source platforms in a venture with IBM. The trials should last from three to six months and include large departments such as the Department of Work and Pension, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, Office of the eEnvoy, as well as smaller bodies such as Newham Borough Council and Orkney Council. The scale of the pilots will also vary. Spokesperson Martin Day, of the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) told us it would include 'a wide spectrum of trials - from a Government department sitting down with IBM to come up with solution for a specific issue from scratch, to controlled environment comparisons between applications running on Open Source and proprietary systems.' An IBM spokesperson could not tell us precise details of the deployment, but said, 'I know Linux is being considered,' and that everything from servers to notebooks would be involved. The OGC has said that departments choosing Linux-based products will receive 'additional savings'. News source: PCPro |

(bbe/c't) Bron: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/data/bbe-17.10.03-001/ I'm not being rude. You're just insignificant. |

CD-Copy Protection Killed by Shift Key A flaw has been unravelled in the CD-Copy protection technology developed by SunnComm Technologies Inc. which is so simplistic, it requires the stroke of a single key to exploit. The flaw, discovered by John Halderman (a Princeton graduate student), in SunComm's MediaMax CD3 software invokes a work around solution to disable the "autorun" encrytion software on a protected disk. Quite simply, by holding down the shift key when accessing a CD in Windows, the encryption software designed by SunComm to encrypt the contents of that compact disk simply fails to ever execute. In stopping this auto execution, the software which is designed to install a proprietary driver to access the contents of the CD is cancelled. The technology, used in Anthony Hamilton's "Comin' From Where I'm From" was released from BMG into the US market earlier this year. The CD fails to work at all on a Mac or Linux based computer due to the disc copy protected design. BMG claimed to be aware of the exploit, stating that the technology was designed to be a "speed bump" for users who wish to copy the CD rather then a full fledged lock down of that CD due to their desires to not cripple the CD's playability and flexibility.
