Nog een album review, Directe link: http://www.disagreement.net/reviews/massiveassault_dystopianprophecies.html It’s been three years since Dutch death metal purists released their debut EP Conflict, making me wonder why they used the time to come up with only thirty-five minutes of music, especially since their first longplayer contains new recorded versions of one song from said EP and one song from an earlier demo that even features their ex-vocalist. Stylistically Massive Assault haven’t changed an ounce. They are still knee-deep into early Nineties Swedish death metal, with pioneers like Entombed, Dismember but also Dutch bands like Asphyx having left an impact on their sound. Apart from the slightly longer title track which concludes the CD, we get a constant onslaught of death metal pieces that run between three and four minutes. The band’s philosophy is best demonstrated on the short O.S.D.M. which stands of course for Old School Death Metal, coming with lyrics that couldn’t be any more direct or simpler. Massive Assault don’t like to complicate things, preferring instead to play things the hard and rough way. Switching skilfully between mid-tempo grooves and faster old school riffing, Dystopian Prophecies manages to entertain from beginning to end, but honestly, you won’t find any original ideas on this record. The quartet is averse to contemporary tendencies in death metal and stubbornly follows its musical vision as if the last fifteen years had never happened. The suitable production underlines the authenticity of it all, giving Dystopian Prophecies the necessary credibility to work as a sincere tribute to the early days of Scandinavian death metal. The long time experience of the band that started back in 2001 furthermore ensures that the final result is a very convincing exercise in retro delight that should get the attention of everyone who was there when the movement started and is now tired of new currents diluting the original intent. www.disagreement.net Dirty Bird Studio for recording, mixing, mastering for CD & vinyl, re-amping, drumediting |

Album review - voicesfromthedarkside.de MASSIVE ASSAULT Dystopian Prophecies (Crashlanding Records) 34:41min Yeah, Massive Assault, oldschool, Massive Assault, Death Metal! It’s oldschool time again and MASSIVE ASSAULT’s first full-length CD convinces in everything. Oldschool Death Metal in the vein of early ENTOMBED (the first 15 seconds in ‘Come With Me’ are a slight rip off of the opening sequence of ‘Left Hand Path’ if you ask me – in a positive way) and DISMEMBER with the groove of newer AT THE GATES when they were still alive. These are MASSIVE ASSAULT’s trademarks, delivered in an absolutely perfect sound and a layout which hardly could be better. This is not the most original formula in those current times as oldschool Death Metal is nothing special anymore, nevertheless what those 5 Dutchmen are doing on “Dystopian Prophecies” is above the average when comparing them to current oldschool releases. Next to influences from the mentioned bands a huge dose of Crustcore is included as well which is some kind of a necessity when talking about oldschool Swedish Death Metal – from the Netherlands, haha! 9 songs of Swedish Death Metal “bringing the oldschool back to life, devoted to Metal for life – reclaiming the crown of oldschool Death Metal” to quote from their song ‘O. S. D. M.‘ (‘Old School Death Metal’), yes man, every man needs a target in life and this isn’t the worst one, haha. From my point of view they are still in a “little” distance from getting the crowned oldschool Death Metal kings, though they are on a good way and “Dystopian Prophecies” is a great and tight release which is professional from the beginning to its end. Get it either from www.crashlandingrecords.com or www.myspace.com/massiveassault. And remember: Massive Assault, oldschool, Massive Assault, Death Metal. quote: Geweldig man!...
