Review: Massive Assault! Face crushing Death Metal! Death Strike - 2012 Hoogeveen's own war death metal face rippers are not afraid to tear it up on this monster album! This mean bastard is mixed perfectly, and the only reason that the mix is worth mentioning is because it is so hard to capture that OSDM sound the way they did twenty years ago. The album art really paints a picture for how great the album is going to sound. Not to judge by its cover but the cover just screams Bolt Thrower and many other veterans from Sweden. But enough about the awesome quality of the CD. It begins with a very short clip of two soldiers yelling at each other for about 2 seconds and then just unleashes the fury with heavy death metal hits and furious drumming! The interesting thing about their guitar work is that if this album were mix, or maybe the vocals being different, this could almost pass as a crusty war album. Especially if they decided on a different logo and album cover, this could easily sneak by as another genre. That really adds a interesting twist in this album, with just those punky crust riffs they dish out to keep the energy pumping. Don't think for a second that this is just a crust album mixed like death. That is entirely not it. If you listen to the beginning of the song "Pride" it has some melodic elements that are very prevalent throughout the CD. Then it may move down to another Entombed sounding riff then maybe something crusty. The vocals on this are very death metal. He sounds very swede death. Like, the singer of Grave, or oddly enough, early Hypocrisy, which is odd be cause that band never makes it to my player. They do sound very similar though. This is a very unique mix of music here and a very solid release. Any death metal fan would defiantly love this. It would be awesome to see these guys on the Obscene Extreme line up! They would fit perfectly. Next time they are in the states it would be well worth it to check them out! score 82% Favorite Tracks: Driven Towards Death, Aggressive Depression, Operation Anthropoid http://ravenousreviewswebzine.blogspot.com/2012/02/massive-assault-face-crushing-death.html Dirty Bird Studio for recording, mixing, mastering for CD & vinyl, re-amping, drumediting |

After recently getting into Dutch death metal bands such as Asphyx and Hail of Bullets, coming into contact with yet another act from Netherlands in the form of Massive Assault certainly excited me, leaving me almost expecting yet another slab of doomish death metal that the aforementioned Dutch legends have released. But with Death Strike, Massive Assault has broken down all geographical boundaries, and what one instead finds on the album leans closer to the sounds that Swedish death metal pioneers such as Entombed has crafted. True to the album artwork, album opener Driven Towards Death introduces listeners with the sounds of war at the background but before long all hell break loose as the band bludgeons the listeners with their brand of Swedish-styled death metal, though Massive Assault includes a slightly more punkish edge to the music with the d-beat drumming style and the simplistic riffing patterns on the guitars, sounding like a slightly more polished version (in terms of production quality) of crusty Swedish band Bastard Priest. Riffs on songs like the intro of Cycle of Violence immediately bring to mind songs like Bloodbath's Breeding Death. The track even contains a short and simple lead guitar solo. Vocalist Carl's style seethes with rage, and the way he spits out his lyrics further emphasises the punk elements that the band has included in their musical style. The band's songwriting abilities are also evident throughout the album, and also keeps to the aforementioned Bloodbath's formula of "brutality comes through simplicity". Though there is nothing particularly innovative or inventive on Death Strike, the fast pace of the music and the catchy tunes of the music (like the galloping riffs of Pride) helps to ensure that there is not a moment of boredom, and keeps the listener's head banging throughout the entirety of the album. Slower moments such as Turning Tides also display the heavier and more brutal side of the band, with crushing riffs that are made even heavier by the abrasive guitar tone that Swedish-styled death metal has come to be known for. Death Strike is overall a no holds barred release, choke full of fun moments that would manage to get even the most uninitiated metalhead to start digging for more similar releases. Hoppa! “Death Strike” By Derelikt Waugh Are you looking for a dose of originality in your death metal? Well, you better look to a different band other than Massive Assault. These Dutch lunatics are more than a tad derivative, but I’m using that word in the most complimentary way possible. On their full-length debut entitled “Death Strike”, Massive Assault truly delivers the blood and guts, old school Swedish death style. What they are lacking in the originality department, they more than make up for with fat and memorable riffs, D-beat blasts and soulful, gravel-throated growls from beyond the grave. The playing on this ten-song hymnal of Hell is truly top notch, especially the extremely audible, fuzz-drenched bass work. The bass riffs are high in the mix, something that truly sets this album apart from the work of lesser “retro death” outfits. I’d be hard pressed to pick a favorite tune on this album, as there is no filler material whatsoever. All ten songs truly hit that good ol’ crusty, D-beat mark, decimating most other Sunlight Studio emulating clones in the process. Yes, Massive Assault uses a tried and tested death metal formula, but what really puts them high on the ancient pedestal is their ability to write crunchy, highly-addictive songs. While “Death Strike” sounds as though it could have come straight from the bowels of the early nineties (minus the excellent production), I think that it most certainly could be considered a modern day classic. Massive Assault’s sonic arsenal surely owes a debt of gratitude to old school gods like Entombed and Dismember, but when the overall package is this damn excellent, do their influences really matter? http://www.wormwoodchronicles.com/torture-chamber/massive-assault |
