Review Cosmogenesis in Decibel Magazine: After having your clock cleaned by the (whodathunkit!) surprisingly killer comeback album from Cynic, perhaps you’re hungry for more of that turbo-prog-death-jazz-whatsit sound. Look no further than Germany’s Obscura-sick technical musicians (obviously) weaned on ’90s classic progressive death acts, but with eyes fixed toward the future. In fact, since their debut album, ’06s self-released Retribution, guitarist-growler/ band kingpin Steffen Kummerer has enlisted bona fide players of that era: ex-Pestilence bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling and former Necrophagist slayers, drummers Hannes Grossmann and axeman Christian Muenzner. Cosmogenesis, their sophomore release, is brimming with mad time changes, hypertechnical death chugga-chuggas, arpeggio pick sweeps, pissed caveman vocal barks and so many riffs per tune that we're dying to see the schematics laid out on their practice space eraser board. Said board diagrams most certainly look like a fucked-up science equation for chaos theory. Fittingly, the techdeath genre's sci-fi overtones are present throughout, with trippy interstellar moments and song titles sounding like cosmic theology. Take 'Orbital Influences,' with its quite beautiful melodic guitar phrases and fretless bass thumps, slides and squiggles that evoke 'Call of Chthulu' spooning 'Return to Forever'. (Admittedly, said four-string trickery is a style not necessarily keen to all extreme metal freaks.) There's enough über-spastic switch-ups to appeal to the young metal-tician seeking something to wash down his/her Dillinger with, but for old-school death-fusion aficionados, this shit is mandatory. Review Cosmogenesis op Blastbeat.nl: Wat heb ik de afgelopen week Relapse Records verguisd en bejubeld! Verguisd vanwege hun beveiliging op de nieuwe (promo)cd van Obscura. Ieder nummer is in ongeveer 10 stukken geknipt, waardoor hij op bijna geen enkel apparaat is af te spelen. Bij mij deed hij het alleen foutloos in de auto… Toch begrijp ik de platenmaatschappij wel, want wereldwijd verschijnt ‘ie pas op 2 maart. Bejubeld heb ik ze dus ook, want dit is ‘n wel heel bijzondere cd! Werkelijk ongekend wat Obscura laat horen op Cosmogenesis. Ik heb het Franse Orakle de “Dream Theater van de black metal” genoemd. Voor Obscura heb ik ook zo’n dooddoener: de “Dream Theater van de death metal”! Eerlijkheidshalve moet ik bekennen dat ik het debuut Retribution niet ken, behalve dan het nummer Humankind via hun MySpace. Ik heb begrepen dat, net als dat nummer, die hele plaat ruiger en simpeler was dan deze opvolger. Zou goed kunnen, want de tegenwoordige stijl is wel héél progressief. Er zijn waanzinnig veel wendingen en de hele cd is technisch zééééér hoogstaand. De stijl is continue afwisselend tussen agressief, progressief, rustgevend en ADHD. Vaak moet ik denken aan Death en vreemd genoeg dan de ene keer uit hun heerschende beginperiode en vaak ook juist aan de latere platen. Terwijl die periodes behoorlijk ver uit elkaar liggen naar mijn mening. Maar Obscura weet ze knap genoeg perfect te combineren. Zelf zegt de band en/of platenlabel: “Recommended if you like Necrophagist, Morbid Angel, Cynic, Atheist, Death (aha, dus toch), Pestilence, Watchtower, Origin, Cannibal Corpse and Meshuggah.” Necrophagist en Pestilence zijn niet zo vreemd, want Obscura bestaat voornamelijk uit ex-leden van deze bands. (En met deze kennis begrijp je ook meteen dat Obscura geen gewone doorsnee death metal band is). Verder zijn er gastbijdragen van muzikanten uit Watchtower en Cynic. En toch kom ik opnieuw met Dream Theater aanzetten, want tijdens rustige (midden)stukken moet ik regelmatig aan hun debuut denken. Door Jeroen Paul Thesseling (de geweldige bassist) schiet Primus me ook zo nu en dan glimlachend te binnen, maar dat heeft meer met z’n stijl van spelen te maken dan met de muziek. Hij is trouwens de Nederlandse inbreng in dit verder Duitse gezelschap. Het thema van Cosmogenesis is het ontstaan van de aarde. Dat komt terug in de hoes en in de teksten. Helaas ook soms in kosmisch geneuzel of ‘n spacy stemmetje. Die gedeelten zijn bij mij niet favoriet, maar dat valt absoluut in het niet bij de overweldigende rest. Als ik de ruim 99 nummers (inderdaad, die beveiliging…) moet samenvatten: retestrakke technische (progressieve) death metal bestaande uit “muzikantengepiel” afgewisseld door blastbeats. Met dat “gepiel” bedoel ik dat de muzikanten regelmatig showen wat ze allemaal kunnen. En hoewel dat altijd goed uitpakt binnen de songs moet je daar natuurlijk wel van houden. Als je alleen van “eenvoudige” death metal houdt is deze cd misschien te hoog gegrepen. Aan de andere kant kan het ook heel leerzaam zijn om te ontdekken dat death metal dus ook zo kan klinken. Knappe jongen die nu nog durft te beweren dat ruige muziek altijd simpel in elkaar steekt! Tot slot dan mijn waardering voor deze cd uitgedrukt in punten. Vroegâh was ik dol op bands als Watchtower. Kon mij niet ingewikkeld genoeg zijn. Tegenwoordig trek ik dat niet meer. Tsja, smaken veranderen. Maar dat betekent wel dat deze cd mij voor ‘n ernstig dilemma stelt, want dit is echt fantastisch. Dagenlang heb ik met 90 punten als eindcijfer in m’n hoofd rondgelopen. Maar ik vrees dat ik de band daarmee tekort doe als ik mijn tegenwoordige smaak teveel laat meespelen. Daarom heb ik het naar boven bijgesteld. Eens kijken of ik begin maart gelijk krijg en Obscura in blijkt te slaan als ‘n bom in het (death) metal wereldje. Score: 95/100. Review Cosmogenesis op Metalunderground.com: Bands within the death and black metal genres are usually characterized by extremely rough early releases that get progressively better as they find their sound and nail down their production techniques. Despite this overriding trend, Obscura has somehow catapulted themselves well past all of their competition into the highest tier of the technical death metal field with only their sophomore release. Then again, their prowess probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, considering the line-up now includes musicians from such acts as Necrophagist and Pestilence. If that wasn’t enough, adding in Tymon from Cynic in a guest spot should seal the deal on “Cosmogenesis,” which undoubtedly will be hailed as one of the great death metal albums of the year. “The Anticosmic Overload” immediately shows off both the power and technical prowess of “Cosmogensis,” with fast, frantic, and complex dual guitars racing around each other in intricate patterns of truly cosmic proportions. One of the best qualities of the album also makes an early appearance when the bass shows up high enough in the mix to be clearly heard even when the guitars are raging. The bass playing doesn’t just complement the other instruments but rather adds something integral that would seriously detract from the music if it were removed. The vocals start off in a more modern black metal style, somewhere between a scream and a growl that is absolutely seething with fury and strength, and then switch to the more traditional deep death growl that has less range but more weight. Each of the songs features a good mixture of the two to prevent the growls and shrieks from ever getting monotonous or blending in together. New twists and variations are revealed in the second track, “Choirs of Spirits,” when distorted clean vocals appear unexpectedly and are filtered with some sort of echo to sound like a voice bouncing off of a satellite far off in the cosmos. The end of the song again shows how closely knit the bass is to the music as it plays off the guitars to give off a sick revolving feel of a planet spinning wildly off of its axis. Every now and again during the album there will be brief display of guitar virtuosity when all of the notes are played at a very high pitch and at an extremely fast speed, much like what might be heard in a power metal act. These more showy moments are usually kept firmly in check and almost always work within the overall melodies so that they don’t take control or subtract from the brutality of the music. “Universe Momentum” starts off with one such showy moment before the guitars completely drop all distortion for a brief time and instead go for more of a folk orientation to work beside some whispered lyrics. The peace is shattered by the requisite heavy scream as the guitars go back into insane mode once more. It’s a trick that has been done quite a few times before, but it’s done so well that it should still get the appropriate head banging response. Some of the musician’s non-metal influences start to shine through with more force on “Desolate Spheres” when a two minute re-tread of everything that had already come before on the album suddenly transforms into an incredibly daring composition that can only be described as jazzy and steamy. By the time “Infinite Rotation” shows up, the listener may need a break because their face has been smashed in with a spiked gauntlet and then caressed by a silk sheet so many times in a row that a breather becomes necessary to be able to adequately digest everything going on. The members of Obscura haven’t pulled the final rabbit out of their hat yet, as even more magic is to be made in the final songs of the album. “Noospheres” starts out with an atmospheric and toned down opening common to horror themed black metal and then moves into the more traditionally heavy guitar parts. Rather than keeping up the technicality of the previous songs it instead packs a heavy punch of melody and mood, which can be a welcome change after so much mind bending guitar prowess. “Cosmogenesis” succeeds where others have failed because it doesn’t stick exclusively to a barrage of sheer brutality or a never ending show of excessive technical skills. The album regularly dips into many different kinds of melodies to provide a much more well rounded experience. Each track is nearly perfectly layered together into a complete maelstrom of force that should make it onto the must have list of technical death metal fans. The only question is how will Obscura possibly top this with their next album? Highs: Top-notch production, extreme technicality, brutal as hell, and a good dose of melody Lows: There's almost too much to digest at once, the album may take multiple listens just to get everything out of it Bottom line: A masterpiece of technical death metal with a good deal of non-metal influences that provides a very satisying musical experience (4,5 out of 5 points). xFiruath - Metalunderground.com [Dit bericht is gewijzigd door MH op 25-01-2009 18:50] |

Echt balen dat de rest van het album nog nergens online te vinden is. Als dit zo doorgaat zou Cosmogenesis wel eens het death metal album van 2009 kunnen worden..
