Sulaco recensie RockEzine
Leave it to Relapse to come up with good bands. This five song mini album is yet another surprisingly good debut on a quality label. Great riffs, weird twists, breaks and tempo changes, grooves, blast beats; it’s all there. Sulaco features Erik Burke on guitar and vocals. Some of you might have seen him playing live as a touring member of Nuclear Assault. Sulaco is somewhat different than the legendary NA though.
This trio with ex members from Lethargy plays metal in the vein of Mastodon and other Relapse bands. It’s not just hard or fast. There’s an intensity to the music that lifts it to a higher level than most other modern day metal. The sound is a bit muffled and flat, hopefully they’ll get a decent budget to record a full length soon.

En die op Vampire
OK, here we go. A new signing on Relapse. Sulaco already got my interest when I found out several members have been involved in bands like Kalibas (Didn't they just break up or something? That would really suck, dammit!) and Lethargy (R.I.P). Although I'm well aware you shouldn't always buy into the whole 'ex-members of...' hype. This brief EP features 4 tracks with a total running time of 15 minutes. I've always find it difficult to make a proper judgement on a band based on 4 songs alone, but if this is a clear indication of where they're headed, we're in for a treat when the full-length arrives. Expect technical and pretty complex metalcore with some grind thrown in the mix. The first thing that really hit me were the vocals. Apart from a dry growl, there's some strained high pitched screaming going on that really works quite well with the music. The guitar patterns are pretty interesting, although not quite as 'quirky' as I expected them to be. Mainly focusing on tight riffling, but often throwing in some more unusual notes and runs. The drumming is top-notch, tight and precise. For some reason they've chosen to weave the separate songs together with short noise interludes. Production wise, there are no complaints of any kind. Everything's pretty transparant and easy to follow (up to the huge bass, always pouding away in the distance). The tones are warm and natural with plenty of thickness. Again, I really like the way the vocals just sink in with the music without distracting. The writing is on and off between chaotic and more solid, it can't really call it memorable, though. When I have to make a comparison, I'd say the sound lays somewhere between Burnt by the sun and Luddite Clone (now active as Kiss the cynic). The packaging's a bit disappointing, mainly blue colors with some unrecognizable textures going on and the band logo looks like the kind of logo a washing detergent would use for their adverts. Good stuff, but I have the feeling something's missing to make it really spectacular and jaw dropping. I guess my main problem with this is that, even after 10 careful and concentrated listening sessions, I still don't have the feeling it has sunk in completely. But, I'm definitely curious where they'll take it from here. The outfit is tight, the music's interesting, the potential is there. I have the feeling they're going for the Mastadon approach, first release an EP with much promise and then release an utter devastating album that people will talk about for years to come. Who knows?
