Karl Sanders (Nile) over Deicide/Glen Benton on tour:
Steve Asheim Rules.
Most excellent drummer , and a hellofa nice guy.
On that euro tour we did with them I had the distinct privilige to get to watch him from directly behind the kit on several occasions , and what an opportunity to watch a masterful professional at work.
He 's also super easy to talk to you with an easy friendly manner -
as was Mr. Benton.
In fact, Glen was quite an entertaining fellow to hang around with , and I will always appreciate the wealth of experience and Metal wisdom
he shared with us .
That stuff is priceless - you can't go buy that sort of "schooling" anywhere - and Glen certainly isn' obligated to share that stuff with anybody.
Yes, Glen is a Nut , and certainly lives his lifestyle to the fullest , but he has another side of him that often gets overlooked -
he is also a sensitive articulate , intelligent man -
and sometimes a big kid who loves to screw around and be funny.
His tour antics are over the top - and usually completely hilarious .
He is a complex person who can go from beatting the crap out of some crazy asshole who tries to fuck with him , to showing genuine care and concern for others who are around him , to generously sharing/discussing the finer points of metal survival and record company treachery with those of us smart enough to pay attention and learn something.
I remember on one show in Italy , on the Xmas Fest last year ,
the backstage area had a sort of Gym style shower area -
you know, with like six showers in one room , with no doors or anything ,
the entrance was like 10 feet wide , and that was right in the middle of the entire backstage area that was being shared by like 6 bands .
People would be like walking around fixing themselves coffee or eating pizza, drinking beer , changing clothes , and here was one entire side of the room was the showers .
Its sort of like ~
what if you put catering , tuning room , dressing room ,band guest meet and greet , and everything else that goes on backstage inside an NFL locker room/shower .
Now, the swedish band were all in their element , the 5 of them all got in the shower together, drinking beer and having a good ole soap- dropping -shampoo-lathering comraderie.
But the rest of us, well , ya know if all there is to eat is some crappy pizza , I sure don't want to have eat pizza and have to witness a bunch of naked swedish guys carrying on in their swedish "manly" fashion -
if you can possibly understand.
And neither did any of the other bands or tour crew for that matter.
( which BTW included tour members of both genders ).
And I am sure there were more than a few tour members
who would have preferred some amount of privacy while bathing.
So when Glen wanders by and sees this ridiculous situation ,
he takes matters into his own hands ,
and grabs this big huge row of metal lockers from across the other side of the room, and with a herculean display ,drags the whole thing over to make a big wall in front of the shower room -
so all the rest of the bands can have some sort of privacy while taking a shower. And as I recall that day, Glen was not in the least bit interested in bathing himself -
What a selfless act.
( or maybe he was just tired of the whole Swedish thing, who knows )
In any case,
I would certainly be most honored to tour with Deicide again.
They were great to be around , and treated us well.
