In 2008, CONVERGE vocalist Jacob Bannon approached DEATHSPELL OMEGA about contributing to a track on the band’s forthcoming album, “Axe to Fall”.

CHRISTIAN: Franck, our producer, is a huge fan. Without him, I would never have heard CONVERGE – or BOTCH, for that matter. Both bands were undeniably creative, which I recognised immediately. I don’t know what either does these days, but their music from those years was great.

DEATHSPELL OMEGA responded positively – notable in itself, given how carefully guarded the band’s collaborations have been.

CHRISTIAN: It was the challenge I found alluring. On paper, it made little sense, but I saw it as another summit to climb. Remember the “Reign in Blood” anecdote? I remain convinced to this day that such counterintuitive encounters can sometimes yield pure magic.

From your perspective, what would CONVERGE bring to the table in a potential collaboration?

CHRISTIAN: It mostly came down to their guitarist, Kurt Ballou, who is also a very talented sound engineer. What Franck found most compelling about Ballou’s work was the way he handled bass and drums together, creating an incredibly powerful rhythmic foundation. It is monstrous, yet somehow retains an organic quality.

Why did the project never proceed?

CHRISTIAN: Jacob cut contact. My guess is that he realised his audience might not appreciate the collaboration. But again, this is only speculation. At the end of the day, it held no importance to us – we had a great deal of music to write, concepts to complete, and the rest felt insignificant.
