Here's a review going up on PITRIFF.COM today.
Metallica – St. Anger
2003 Elektra

Well here it is folks, what we’ve all been waiting for. This biggest band in the world is finally set to release their comeback album amid swirling rumors that they have returned to the heavy sounds of the past. They are set to reclaim their spot atop the Heavy Metal world! At least that is what we were led to believe, believe me nothing could be further from the truth. Plain and simple, this is just an awful effort. The last vestiges of respect I had for Metallica slowly drained away as painful song after painful song droned through my head and left me stunned at how far a legend can stray.
Let me say this first, I worshipped Metallica’s first 4 albums. They to me are the greatest 4 album stretch by any band in history, they forever changed the face of Heavy Metal. MASTER OF PUPPETS and RIDE THE LIGHTNING are both in my top 5 albums of all time and to pick which one is better is a near impossibility. When they changed gears for the BLACK ALBUM I was confused, but still fully on board, often getting into arguments trying to defend it merits. I even like LOAD for the most part. When RELOAD hit I starting heading for the door in a slow walk. SYMPHONY & METALLICA turned that walk into a brisk run. By the time they started all the legal assaults on downloaders I could have beaten Carl Lewis in the 100m dash. Still somewhere deep inside I held out hopes that they would someday let the air back out of their egos and remember what it was like to write songs that made fans worship them and other bands bitter because they knew they had no hopes of matching them. That little bit of hope is now extinguished, this is a band that reeks of corporate sell out. They write songs that descend to the bottom depths of Nu-Metal and beg for radio airplay.
The problems with this album are too numerous to mention in full detail. Like my cohort Chris stated, the production is the biggest mistake, but that is just the beginning. The lyrics are just pathetic, moronically repetitive, and delivered by a James Hetfield that no longer seems in any way menacing. The drum tracks from Lars Ulrich are just flat out annoying. The constant trash can banging throughout every song is just baffling. Someone actually thought this would be a good thing? And let’s not forget the guitar work, the one thing that always made Metallica rise above all other pretenders for the throne. There is more fast paced riffing on this album than any of the bands more recent efforts, but that seems to be all just a smoke screen. While the guitars are faster, at the same time they are considerably less heavy than ever before. Add to that the fact that they grind to a halt way too often to let Hetfield spew out a few tortuous lyrics. Top it all off with the total lack of guitar solos from Hammett, not a single one folks. Why in the hell would you take an immense talent like Hammett and not utilize him at all? I would like to say that there is one song on ST. ANGER that is worth listening to, but I would be lying through my teeth. Each and every one of them is equally nauseating.
This album does do a couple of positive things for me. First it further cements the opinion in my mind that Cliff Burton was the driving force behind Metallica. They have never been the same since his tragic death. Second it makes me appreciate the recent albums by Anthrax, Overkill, and even Agent Steel. All three were once bands that lurked in the immense shadow of Metallica, now instead they are making quality albums with little or no fanfare. I am sure there will be scads of fans that will trumpet this as the return of Metallica, but in reality Metallica died long ago, and this is just the thin shell that remains
